Kochka answered some questions for Recommended #23 and now pass the batton onto No Island.

Who are you recommending? and why?

I’m recommending Prelude To The Hunt. Aside from being total dudes their music is shit-hot and makes me want to punch passers-by when i’m running. This is a good thing.

How would you describe the music?

There’s a bit of a trend in hardcore at the moment for bringing together elements of sludge, crust, 90s Swedish death metal (not that god awful modern american stuff) and hardcore (disclaimer at this point: people like me get hung up on the┬áminutiae of very specific sub-genres. I fully appreciate that to the casual listener this is all pish). Prelude… bring all this kinda stuff to the table, but whereas far too many bands going down this corpse-strewn road just fire out riff after samey riff, they work in some ass-kicking grooves and hooks that these other jokers forget about.

How did you discover this band?

I saw them first at the Banshee in Edinburgh. They brought in the kind of wall of valve amps and cabs that make grown metal-junkies weep/erect. They were loud as fuck and brutal (again, these are good things).

How would you describe the live experience?

Bleak, loud, and likely to leave you with a bangover the next day.

If you had to suggest one of their songs to start someone off with what would it be?

Probably the 4th track on their EP, Grudgebearer. There’s so much going on in the song – I love the way it picks up the pace at 1.15, kicking it into a flat 4/4 beat gets the head nodding, and the beatdown later is immense.

Finally, do you have anything else you’d like to add about this band?

Buy their merch. Go to shows. Bang your head (sly Gravediggaz reference at the end there. Class).

A big thanks to Chris from No Island for the Recommendation.
