Blue Sky Archives are self-proclaimed pioneers of “Post-Rock Pop” from Glasgow and they release their new 3 song EP, Triple A-Side, on the 27th of February.
This EP showcases the bands excellent melodic sound and the progress they’re making as a band. The indie feel of previous release Plural is succeeded by an altogether poppier affair yet with its heavier moments too.
Opener Bitches is a great combination of indie guitars on top of a much layered Post-Rock backing. First single from the EP and free download Cosplay the Hard Way is the song where Lauren Mayberry’s voice really takes centre stage. Her gentle, poppy delivery is refreshing and endearing, a voice you could listen to all day without tiring of it. The Post-Rock instrumental sections almost make it seem like you’re listening to Camera Obscura’s heavier cousin.
The final song of the EP, Back in a Liquid Minute, opens with a nice little guitar riff and closes with a – dare I say it – epic final refrain. The last minute highlights this band’s excellent use of harmonies with the group chanting “My body is your battleground” over the top of an almost military style drum beat.
Blue Sky Archives take their influences from a wide range of musical styles and it’s refreshing to see these blending together so nicely. This is more than your average indie-pop fare and on this evidence this band is definitely going places.
